Council of Representative elections have returned after a two-year hiatus following a pause due to the pandemic. Prior to that, we had started the move to a more proportional representation of Council, moving to conducting elections in ‘thirds’ – with a third of the council seats coming up for election each year. The first third was elected in 2019, 2022 will see the second third covered, and the final third in 2023.

There are 13 seats on the Council of Representatives that members can nominate themselves for – or be nominated by someone else – by 13 May 2022. Anyone interested must send in 500 words about why they think they are suitable for the role to elections@britishparking.co.uk

If more than one person nominates for a position, an election is held voted on by members of the relevant membership group. For example, if two people go for a regional chair position, then members of that regional group vote for who they feel is the most suitable candidate. The BPA team operates all elections but the actual canvassing is down to the individuals who are seeking election.

Positions up for election in May 2022

  • Chair of the Eastern Region
  • Chair of the North West Region
  • Chair of the Yorkshire and Humber Region
  • Local Authority (x3)
  • Enforcement Agent (x2)
  • Parking Technology (x2)
  • Parking on Private Land Operators (x3)

Additionally, this year, there are 2 other seats on the Council of Representatives, that members can nominate themselves for – or be nominated by someone else – by 13 May 2022. These positions have become available because existing postholders have resigned mid-term and suitable candidates will be co-opted by the BPA Council to fill the vacancies until May 2023. At that time the posts will be subject to routine elections with a full three-year term available. Existing postholders would be eligible for re-election.

These are:

  • Parking Technology (x1)
  • North East Region (x1)

Anyone interested must send in 500 words about why they think they are suitable for the role to elections@britishparking.co.uk and include:

  • a suitable photograph for distribution to voters alongside election materials; and
  • a contact telephone number (for BPA head-office use only)

If more than one person nominates for a position, an election is held voted on by existing Council Representatives [only] and the successful candidate will then be co-opted to BPA Council for the remainder of the term, i.e., until May 2023.

Future election dates

Results of the elections will be announced in June, and people officially take up their new posts at the Annual Council meeting in July.

The next 13 seats for the Council of Representatives will come up for election in May 2023; then by May 2024, it will be back round to those that first came up in 2019. Service Board elections take place in late summer each year.
