Review of the AOS Conference 2020

The third annual AOS Conference 2019 was a roaring success thanks to all our exhibitors, speakers and delegates who came to Birmingham and took part in the conference.

John McArdle, president of the BPA, welcomed everyone and set the scene for the day. Highlighting that this will be an exceptional year in parking as not only will there be a new Parking Code of Practice Act, our own Code of Practice has been updated and the BPA will also be turning 50.

The opening sessions addressed the changing world looking at issues such as the importance of lobbying, the role of an independent appeals services and sharing the recent results of the BPA AOS Census from our auditors Mazars.

We also had a presentation from our Gold Sponsor, ZZPS, looking the importance of having the appropriate protocols in place for debt recovery. SSAIB discussed how parking operators can achieve certification against the Surveillance Camera Code of Practice, with BPA Lawline looking at all upcoming legal matters which could impact the sector over the next 12-18 months.

The day ended on a golden high with inspirational speaker Sally Gunnell sharing the highs and lows of career and how she overcame various obstacles to achieve Olympic Gold. She talked about the importance of well-being and strong leadership leaving delegates feeling inspired and ready to push ahead.

Planning has already started for our AOS Conference in 2021 and we look forward to welcoming everyone back.

Special thanks to our Gold Sponsor ZZPS, and Silver Sponsors, Debt Recovery Plus and ZatPark.

Review of the AOS Conference 2019

The AOS conference 2019 has been hailed as a great success by those who travelled to Birmingham for the second annual event for BPA operators.

Association President Zulfi Ali made his opening address to an audience of more than 100 people.  The day was filled with opportunities to find solutions to common challenges and discussions around how members can help shape the future of the sector.

There was much audience participation with the issues and topics presented, especially around the Parking (Code of Conduct) Bill as the conference welcomed Sarah McLean, bill manager at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) to provide an update on its current status.

Richard Walker, from the North Essex Parking Partnership, spoke of how the Positive Parking Agenda (PPA) is reaching out across the industry by encouraging the private sector to sign up too.

The end of the conference saw Fabrice Muamba take to the stage for what was a truly inspirational talk. He told the tale of his amazing life, from refugee to professional football player – a career cruelly cut short when he suffered a massive heart attack during a game between Bolton and Spurs in 2012. After taking questions, he left the audience with this advice: ‘Enjoy this moment on earth – if there is something you want to do, go for it.’

From an exhibitors, and sponsors, perspective, the AOS conference was brilliant, we spoke to lots of people, many we knew and we met quite a few new contacts, so the objective of the day was met. The sessions were interesting and informative too, so well done to the AOS team for putting it together.

Colin Arthur, ZZPS

The AOS conference provides a good platform to meet and share best practice with other operators. The slido app was very useful and allows the less forward attendees to ask questions.
