Royal Mint to withdraw old nickel coins

The Royal Mint have announced that some of the cupro nickel 5 pence and 10 pence coins will be withdrawn from circulation, to be replaced with new nickel plated steel 5 pence and 10 pence coins.

The withdrawal of these coins will begin in January 2013 and is will last between three to five years. It is not expected that 100% of the cupro nickel coins will be withdrawn but this depends on the work over the next few years.

The new nickel plated steel coins are dated 2011 and issued from January 2013. The Royal Mint can offer advice on updating your coin-accepting equipment if you would like it.
