Westfield Stratford City was announced as ‘Building Project of the Year’ at the 2012 Constructing Excellence Awards and is the first shopping centre in the UK to achieve both the ‘Secured by Design’ and ‘Park Mark’ awards.
Hailed as one of the most ambitious retail and regeneration projects that has raised the bar on build design and construction within London and the South East. Launched in 2007, the Constructing Excellence Awards have become one of the leading built environment awards in the UK and include nine regional awards ceremonies encompassing 10 regions across the UK.
Winning Building Project of the Year demonstrates the highest level of technical achievement, innovation, application of best practice throughout the supply chain, and importantly delivered to time, budget and quality to the customer’s delight.
Work to clear the site started in 2008, with original discussions to build going back to 1998 - long before London was granted the 2012 Olympic Games. From start to finish of construction, over 27,000 people have been employed totalling approximately 9 million man-hours. In July 2009 the 1,660 tonne Town Centre Link Bridge was successfully pulled over 11 live railway lines at Stratford station, one of many UK firsts.
Westfield Stratford City has created a new standard for major regeneration developments in the UK, underpinned by some of the most stringent environmental and sustainable development standards ever applied to an urban development in this country.
